M24 Sniper Rifle Weapon System<\/b>\u00a0(SWS<\/b>) is the military<\/a> and police version of the\u00a0Remington Model<\/a> 700 rifle, This rifle being the model name assigned<\/a> by the\u00a0United States<\/a> Army\u00a0after adoption as their standard\u00a0<\/a>sniper rifle in 1988. This sniper rifle is referred<\/a> to as a “weapon system” because<\/a> it consists of not only<\/a> a rifle, but also a detachable\u00a0telescopic sight\u00a0and other accessories.<\/span><\/p>\n

The M24 M24 Sniper Rifle <\/b>has the “long action<\/a>” bolt version of the Remington 700 receiver<\/a> but is chambered<\/a> for the 7.62\u00d751mm NATO “short action<\/a>” cartridge that has an overall length of 2.750 inches (69.85 mm). The “long action” allows the rifle to be re-configured<\/a> for dimensionally<\/a> larger cartridges up to 3.340 inches (84.84 mm) in overall length.<\/span><\/p>\n

This sniper rifle originally<\/a> came tapped for the Leupold Ultra M3A 10\u00d742mm<\/a> fixed-power scope, which came with a circle-shaped mil-dot glass-etched reticle. This was later replaced in 1998 by the Leupold Mk 4 LR\/T M1 10\u00d740mm fixed-power scope with an elongated-shaped mil-dot wire reticle.^{<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n}

The first number is the scope’s magnification (10) and the second number in millimeters (40mm) is the diameter of the objective lens. A fixed power scope has only one magnification (e.g., 10\u00d7) and a variable power scope can be adjusted to focus between a range of magnifications (e.g., 3\u20139\u00d7 is adjustable from a\u00a0minimum\u00a0power of 3\u00d7 to a maximum power of 9\u00d7). The rifle itself comes with a detachable Harris 9\u201313″ 1A2-LM or Harris 9\u201313″ 1A2-L bipod unit.<\/span><\/p>\n

The SWS was to be replaced with the M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System, a contract awarded to Knight’s Armament Company.
